Price vs Value

The cost of something is completely irrelevant to it’s value.
Read that again.

~ Ray Law

Have you ever considered what you’re comparing to when you call something cheap or expensive? What are those parameters? More often than not, we’re comparing two completely different services or items. So instead let’s look at this with “value” in mind.

Firstly, what is value?

We believe value isn’t attached to a singular notion such as price or product, but rather the true desire as an individual versus whether the business or service can provide that to you.

Basically, as an individual, what is valuable to you and if the business is able to provide that for you - then how much you deem that offering to be worth.

Examples

Uber / Taxi

The cost is more in comparison to a normal taxi rank.

However, it has become a leading global taxi service because users value time, effectiveness, efficiency and accessibility. Users deem these qualities to be worth it’s cost.

They can arrange a taxi in any area to go to any destination with ease via the app. They can see where it is live and even know who the driver is in advance. Compared to a traditional taxi rank, you have to search for the number, call, potentially get through or not, arrange and wait without any more information.

There are many users who want a quick, easy, accessible taxi service. Uber is able to provide that and the users deem the price they charge, albeit more than the tradition taxi rank, still worthwhile.

Smart Phones

The latest smartphones which costs between £1100 ~ £1300 on release can be considered extortionate to some yet well justified to others.

New models get released give or take every 12~18 months. More often than not, the spec upgrade is minimal but more importantly, the majority of people never need nor know how to use the phone's technical specifications to its limit. Their daily functions simply do not require its capabilities.

(Are you telling me you can tell the difference between 458 and 515 ppi density on screens from scrolling up and down Instagram?)

So whilst new model smartphones cost considerably more than its generational seniors, many users value brand familiarity, representation and trend. These are valuable for the user, enough so to justify the expense whereas others will not find this worthwhile.

You get the gist.

Hopefully this paints a better picture of the difference between PRICE and VALUE but what about us?
