What is The Bike Project : Refugee Routes?

The Bike Project is a charity that takes second hand bikes, fixes them up and donates them to refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

The UK is bursting with opportunities – but it's also expensive. Especially when you're a refugee expected to live on just £39.60 a week.

The charity’s ethos is that no one should have to choose between eating a square meal and catching the bus. That's where the bikes come in.

They have a initiative called Refugee Routes. The idea is that you cycle the distance of one of the commonly travelled routes, such as Syria to Turkey or Tunisia to Italy, then ride in solidarity with those who have completed the journey.

What are we doing to support?

Each route and challenge commonly takes 3 months to complete.

We are going to complete 5 challenges in 5 days.

Day 1 - Challenge 1: 459 miles - Bike

Day 2 - Challenge 2: 459 miles - Bike

Day 3 - Challenge 3: 160 miles - Rowers

Day 4 - Challenge 4: 301 miles - Rowers + Ski Ergs

Day 5 - Challenge 5a: 50 miles - Rowers
Day 5 - Challenge 5b: 300 miles - Bike

As CrossFit enthusiasts we like a challenge and have decided to make this extra tough for ourselves, completing a total distance of 1,730 miles on a combination of Rogue Echo Bikes, Concept 2 rowers, and Concept 2 Ski-ergs.

We are going to complete a route every Sunday for 5 weeks. Hopefully this extra challenge will reflect the difficulty refugees have to undergo to seek asylum. These routes are suggested to be completed in weeks or months, we are going for hours.

The funds we raise will help donate refurbished bikes to refugees, giving them a free mode of transport so that they can access vital support services, including education and legal advice, while also drastically improving their mental health.

We will do the hard work we need you to do the easy work follow the links in this video to find out where you can make a donation and support us in our challenge.

If you would like to take part and join our efforts in covering the distances, simply come on down on any of the Sundays! (7th, 14th, 21st, 28th Nov, 5th Dec).
