The “Comfort Zone” is a cover up

Getting uncomfortable is actually your comfort zone

How many times have you heard, “get uncomfortable”, “leave your comfort zone behind”, “push past your limits”?

People are constantly pushing themselves or others past the limit in fitness (and life in general too) and it most certainly has its merit at times - but not all the time, in fact not even most of the time.

I want to particularly direct this to a more Coaches / Trainers perspective. After all, if you’re training at a facility, you would expect to receive sound professional guidance on when to push to yourself in training.

So here is the unpopular truth…

The mindset of “push push push” is THE comfort zone itself.

It’s actually more uncomfortable in human nature to say no.

Most Coaches/Trainers are COMFORTABLE with pushing you, motivating you, getting you to sweat.

Most however, on the same scale, are UNCOMFORTABLE with saying no to pushing, saying no to heavier weight, saying no to sweating more. It’s much more difficult to slow down, to challenge, to have a difficult conversation, to admit that there needs to be work done to mechanics before adding more intensity. I get it though, it’s much easier to get someone to work harder and faster than it is define better mechanics in a body.

So the take away is this, and let’s not sugar coat it…

For Coaches/Trainers, leave your own comfort zone. Understand that pushing constantly for higher intensity is your own comfort zone. Support specifically, build better mechanics consistently, then add intensity.

For those who train, get uncomfortable by recognising where you weaknesses are. We all have them and we don’t like them. But it’s okay. Work on them anyway. It’s not always about going faster, or heavier or doing more.
